2 Situation in Europe There is a strong growth trend in recycling of household plastics and energy recovery in Europe, as can be seen in 2011 research data comparing rates across Europe. This data, which can be sourced in Plastics: The Facts 2012 [7], split total recovery rates into the recycling rate and energy recovery rate. The recycling performance across European Union (EU) countries is 15–30% in most cases, with energy recovery levels showing a much wider range of 0–75%. Large rates of energy recovery enabled nine countries (Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Luxemburg, Netherlands and Norway) to achieve a total recovery rate of >80% in 2011.
